This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

I bought "Jock of the Bush Veld" by this author and read it to my 10 year old, who loved it. I highly recommend that book. I was so impressed with that one that I got this one for myself. It's a collection of short stories about the early days in South Africa when the diamond rush was starting. The old fashioned way of writing makes it a little hard to get into at first but you quickly get used to the style. I like "Jock" better because it's more of a personal journal about a young man and his dog as they wagon train to the diamond or gold mines to deliver materials. It's about hunting and the hardships of the trek, but also about the friendships and adventures. This book is interesting too. If you like to read about early days in Africa before everything was settled you might like it too.Product details

The outspan; tales of South Africa Percy Fitzpatrick Books Reviews
Gives a good idea of the difficulties at that time, but somewhat difficult to read (a lot of spoken language a mix of all languages most english and dutch).
But by what I have already read it is very interesting. Since I am going again in September to Cape Town, it is my next book to finish reading!
