The Gantean is a completely original, captivating fantasy tale, full of mysterious magic, interesting peoples and cities and lands. It’s one of the best fantasy books I have ever read and I quickly and easily immersed myself within the unique fantasy settings of this novel.There is a solid story in this book with many sub plots and unexpected turns of events. The characters are real and three dimensional and all are interesting in their own right. The main protagonist is a strong and courageous female heroine but who is not without flaws, making her all the more appealing. The author’s writing is imaginative, descriptive, and very vivid in its creativity, and reads almost poetic.
This is a fantasy story that is easy to read and comprehend, and from the very outset you feel like you have always known Leila and the other characters and are already familiar with the worlds of Gante and Lethemia. The settings are unique and full of complexities, as are the characters in the story, yet the author has managed to write this book in such a way that nothing is ever confusing and you never feel lost along the way.
I am not a big reader of fantasy books, but I thoroughly enjoyed The Gantean. I was hooked from the very opening of the story and I found this book very hard to put down. It’s a brilliant first book of a trilogy where all the books are now available. I would call this book a light fantasy story and anyone who has never read fantasy before or doesn’t particularly like fantasy books, will most likely enjoy reading this one. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

What an anthropological adventure. I loved every minute of this book.
In a time of sequels, prequels and reboots on TV and in movies, I want an original story. Something different; something that hasn't been done before. Finally - the beginning of what looks to be a grand fantasy tale is out. There's a beautiful map to orient your mind to the new world you will enter. Words from an original language are sprinkled throughout. Don't worry - there's a glossary. This author has thought of it all. Love is in the details.
The hook is the opening line. Immediately, it transports you to another place, another time, and the story unfolds. Settle in as magical elements, a cast of shadows and the beauty of light gather together to show how Leila will survive in a new world. Sometimes you need a heroine to show you a different kind of strong. The clincher is the ending line. What happens next? The second book in this tale can't come out soon enough.
My favorite books are the ones that drop me into new and unpredictable worlds, where I feel like I’m an explorer in the uncharted wild. The Gantean immerses you into a foreign culture, and it brings that sense of discovery that only the most imaginative of writers can create. It’s an exciting adventure that will live in your brain even after you’ve reached the final page, and I recommend it to anyone, even readers who are not typically into fantasy.

I was hooked from the first page! This is a fascinating story that takes place in an imaginary world that is rich with detail about two cultures, their values, magic, rituals, beliefs and conflicts. There is a heroine at the center of the story that is compelling because she is multidimensional -- strong, courageous, vulnerable, torn with conflicting emotions and loyalties -- and magical.
The author does a fantastic job of creating a story that keeps moving and developing in a way that makes you want to keep reading. I always wanted to know what was going to happen next -- and was surprised over and over again by the twists and turns in the plot. The ending leaves you counting the days until the second book of the trilogy comes out.
In The Gantean, Street has created a sweeping epic that will not soon leave my mind or heart. Full of mystery, well-developed characters, and intrigue, I could not help but be engrossed in this tale. This is one of the most unique fantasies I've read recently with a world unlike any other. Fans of Tamora Pierce and lush, romantic fantasies with strong female leads will not want to miss this series.
Extremely well written! Fine balance of romance to light erotica to fantasy. Well developed world building. My only distaste is for the possessiveness of a few male characters. The whole ownership issue is repugnant to me and limited my enjoyment of this story. In some fairness I received the third book for free and love Sterling enough that I was hooked into buying the other stories. Had I started with this first book I may well have passed the others by.
I will continue to follow and recommend this author.
