It is February 1942 and the war in the Atlantic looks grim for the Allied convoys. The "Great Blackout" has started, leaving the spy center of Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire at a loss as to what the Nazis are planning. U-boat Command has changed the Hydra cipher. The Enigma code cannot be broken. Cipher experts can no longer eavesdrop on Nazi command, which leaves convoys open for attack by packs of marauding Nazi submarines. Winning the Battle of the Atlantic will surely give Hitler a final victory. And who can stop him?

Decoy (Audible Audio Edition) Dudley Pope Richard Dadd Audible Studios Books

Dudley Pope's Decoy" is another in his line of maritime fiction winners. "Decoy" tells the fictional story of how the UK obtains a German "Enigma" machine and key book so as to continue reading German radio messages thus helping to save the nation during the early days of WWII. As usual, Pope is meticulous about the scene setting details, and even gives credit for the origional Enigma "steal" where it is due (to Poland). The characters are well drawn, and the descriptions of what would now be called "PTSD" ring true. The sections on existence in a lifeboat in the North Atlantic are priceless. Entertaining and informative read, well worth the price.

Decoy (Audible Audio Edition) Dudley Pope Richard Dadd Audible Studios Books Reviews

Anyone interested in gaining insight into submarine warfare during wartime will find this insightful. One wonders at the nerve required to carryout these missions.
I'd read the first three of Dudley Pope's "Ramage" nautical series, which takes place in the Napoleonic era. I've enjoyed them. So when I found out that Pope had also written a WWII U-boat story, I thought, count me in! Turns out I was sorely disappointed.

Here's the basic outline Britain is just barely hanging on in the battle of the North Atlantic, thanks to Bletchley Park's ability to read Germany's Enigma messages. Now Admiral Doenitz is about to issue a new version of the Enigma machine to all his U-boats, meaning the Brits will no longer be able to read the wolf packs' messages. Enter the UK's most "diabolically cunning" team of spies/commandoes. Their mission steal one of the new Enigma machines--and don't let the Nazis know that they've done it!

Sounds great, right? And if it had been the plot of a book written by Alistair MacLean, it probably would have been. Unfortunately, Dudley Pope's "Decoy" is deadly dull, with much exposition, precious little action, and page after page of unnecessary description. There seem to be entire chapters dedicated to how the Enigma machine works how many rotors, what the rotors look like, how to set the rotors, how to hook up the internal connecting wires, blah blah blah. I mean, come on, it's a Maguffin! Nobody needs to know how a Maguffin works.

In one scene, we find our British commandoes adrift in a lifeboat in the middle of the Atlantic, trying not to be swamped by stormy seas. Exciting--that is, until Pope makes a two-page digression to discuss How The Duffel Coat Got Its Name. A little later, the commandoes take up the question of relative mortality rates of public school graduates in the two world wars. I kid you not. How dull is this book? The total butcher's bill consists of two dead Nazis--and one of them was killed by accident. A good chunk of this book takes place aboard a U-boat. And nothing happens.

Throughout, the dialogue is an irritating combination of stiff-upper-lip "What-ho, I say, good show old chap" treacle, balanced with impenetrable slang of the type heard in Monty Python's "Bally Jerry" RAF Banter sketch.

Dudley Pope is usually a good writer, as evinced by his "Ramage" series. But "Decoy" is a mess. I am a sucker for WWII submarine stories, which is why I finished the book, but I would not recommend "Decoy" even to the biggest fans of the genre.
This is one of those books that you just have trouble putting down although alot of the book was spent prepapring for actual task- loved it
If you have read Pope's other books, this will be fun! If not you will "wonder..." About all the fuss, which is a shame.

Great read!
I like most of what Pope has written, including this book. It was formerly a library book.
